They're coming.
July 15th is the last day of school. And if you work from home, you already know what that means.
It’s not that you don’t love them. You do. But between "mom/dad, what’s for lunch?" and the tenth interruption of the morning, there’s a proposal to finish, a call to make, and a project that’s already three days late.
Vacation mode doesn't exist when you work for yourself
Employees get vacation. Entrepreneurs and freelancers get... a change of context.
The business doesn't stop. Clients don't know your kids are home. The to-do list doesn't disappear because it's July.
And yet there you are, trying to work with the TV in the background, constant requests, and the guilt of not being fully present in either role.
What actually works
First: accept that your normal schedule won't hold. Stop fighting that.
Second: protect your non-negotiable work hours. Two or three hours early in the morning before they wake up. Or at night. The hours where no one interrupts.
Third: for the hours when you do need to work with them home, leave the house. A different space changes everything. Your brain associates the environment with work mode.
Fourth: communicate it. "From 9 to 11 mom/dad works. At 11 we go out." Kids understand clear rules.
The option that works best
Several of our members at Kiin Hub use exactly this strategy during school breaks: they come in the morning, get two or three hours of focused work done, and leave in time to spend the rest of the day with their kids.
No guilt. No feeling like the day was wasted. Work done.
